How shadow resistance is computed

Every point in the Gear SR and Buffed SR columns, where it comes from, and why the targets are 244 and 160.

Updated Sep 14, 2026

Mother Shahraz's Fatal Attraction is the fight this audit exists for. The number you need is buffed resistance at the pull; the number you control the week before is gear resistance. The table shows both and every source of each.

Gear SR#

For every equipped item at the pull:

  1. Fixed resistance on the item — the shadow resistance in its stats. Read from the offline game data (the same item database wowsims uses), not from Warcraft Logs, which only names the item.
  2. Green suffix. A green "of Shadow Protection" or "of Shadow Resistance" piece carries its resistance in the suffix, not the base item. The suffix values are listed per suffix id (e.g. +30 with +46 Stamina, +23 with +35 Stamina). An unlisted suffix is estimated from its slot and item level by interpolating between the same slot's known greens; the table says Estimated green suffix value: … when that happened, so a surprising number can be checked.
  3. Enchants, kits and the glyph, by enchant effect id: Glyph of Shadow Warding (+20, head, Aldor or Scryer), Shadow Armor Kit (+8 each on chest, legs, hands, feet), Shadow Guard (+10, head or legs), Greater Shadow Resistance on the cloak (+15) or Lesser (+10), Inscription of Endurance (+7 all resistance, shoulder), and the small resist-all cloak and shield enchants (+1, +5).
  4. Gems that give resistance to all schools.
  5. Key items: Medallion of Karabor is credited its +40.

Gear SR is the sum. The Items, Greens, Enchants and Gems columns break it down so a low total can be traced to the slot.

Buffed SR#

Gear SR plus four more things:

  • Buffs at the pull, from the aura snapshot Warcraft Logs records when the boss is engaged. Buffs are grouped, and inside a group only the largest counts:
    • Protection — Prayer of Shadow Protection or Shadow Protection (+70 at max rank; +60, +45, +30 below), Paladin Shadow Resistance Aura (+70 max rank), Gift or Mark of the Wild (+25). One group: a priest's Prayer and a druid's Gift do not add.
    • Flask — Flask of Chromatic Wonder (+35) or Chromatic Resistance (+25).
    • Food — Broiled Bloodfin (+8).
    • Gift of Arthas (+10).
    • Armor — Mage Armor or Demon Armor (+18 at max rank). Fel Armor gives nothing and is shown so the choice is visible. The column reads "n/a" for classes without an armor spell.
  • Racial: Draenei and Undead +10. The log does not carry race; it comes from a racial ability seen in the log, from the guild roster, or from Blizzard's character data.
  • Talent: a Mage's Magic Absorption is +2 all resistance per point, up to 5. Talent ranks are not in the log either; they come from the roster.
  • Manual bonus: a per-player SR adjustment on the roster for anything the engine cannot see.

A buff cast before logging began and never refreshed is invisible to Warcraft Logs; if the buffed number looks low for a player who had Prayer, that is why. Refreshing buffs after the log starts fixes it for next time.

The targets#

Buffed ≥ 244 and gear ≥ 160 by default. 244 is the community consensus for surviving Fatal Attraction ticks with healers keeping up; 160 gear is what leaves the rest to buffs that are reliably available (Prayer +70, flask +35 or Gift +25 and food +8 …). A guild can set both under its page, and a link can override them with ?buffed= and ?gear=. Tanks are listed but never coloured: a tank's gear is not expected to carry resistance.

Where the roster comes in#

Races, talent ranks and manual bonuses live on the guild roster (/guilds/<slug>/roster). An audit reads the roster of the guild named on the report, or your own guild when you are signed in; without either, a seed of known races is used. The ? cells for race, talent and Engineer can be set in place by any member of the guild, and Add to roster on an audit page adds a report's missing players in one click.

When a number is wrong#

Two honest reasons: an unknown item (the offline data does not have it yet — see Unknown items), or an estimated green. Both are named in the player's notes. If neither explains it, the flag icon beside the name sends the row for a look.
